Owned by the Saager family from Switzerland, who recognised the potential of the area between Somerset West and Stellenbosch and acquired Eikendal Cellar, replanting the vineyards and modernising the cellar facilities.
In the “Golden Triangle” of wine growing, Eikendal vineyards flourish in a mountain and maritime microclimate, ideal for the production of quality wine.
We have unbelievable terroir, and great soils, such as koffieklip "coffee stone"and sandy soils with a good clay layer beneath, ideal for vineyards. We also take a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard.
Winemaker Nico Grobler concentrates on classic varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the Flagship Bordeaux-style Eikendal Classique. Numerous awards and accolades from around the world bear testimony to Eikendal’s fine wine heritage.
What to Taste
Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc -
Tropical fruit, melon, Cape gooseberry, guava and a fresh grassy green aroma on the nose that follows through to the palate.
The wine has a full mouth-feel, with a lively, delicate acidity and a long, pleasing finish.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON -
The nose is full of ripe red and black berry and fruit, with hints of tobacco, chocolate, mint and spice flavours.
The palate shows sophisticated oak integration and lively acidity, with firm tannins that are drinking well, but will reward with further ageing.
All in all an intriguing wine that is layered, well structured and very versatile.
